A petition has been launched by campaigners in an continued effort to prevent the closure of a specialist Sickle Cell day unit. To date the petition has attracted more than 37,000 signatures.
The Emergency Sickle Cell Day Unit at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, London is facing closure due to a temporary six-month trial. This invaluable unit provides critical care and support to individuals suffering from sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that predominantly affects people of African and Caribbean descent. Closing this facility would have a devastating impact on the hundreds of families who rely on its specialized services.
Sickle cell disease is a serious concern, affecting over 15,000 people in the UK. The disease causes chronic pain, infections, and even organ damage. It requires regular and immediate medical attention, which the Emergency Sickle Cell Day Unit has tirelessly provided. The team at the unit is equipped with specialized knowledge and compassion to address the unique challenges faced by patients, offering treatments that greatly improve quality of life.
The closure of the unit would force patients to seek care in less specialised settings, increasing strain on other NHS services that may not have the required expertise or familiarity with the complexities of sickle cell disease. This could lead to delays in treatment, poor health outcomes, and added stress for patients and their families.
Campaigners believe that the value of the Emergency Sickle Cell Day Unit extends beyond just medical treatment—it is a haven of support and understanding for a vulnerable community. By keeping it open, we are ensuring that those suffering from sickle cell disease receive the urgent and expert care they deserve.
The campaign wants to show the decision-makers how essential this unit is to the community. Everyone can make a difference through our collective voices. Please, sign this petition to urge the Royal London Hospital and governing health authorities to maintain and adequately fund the Emergency Sickle Cell Day Unit, securing its services for future generations.
