Last year ECA came together with Black Heritage Hub, an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Black community to celebrate Windrush Day at the Fore Street Library in Edmonton.
The event was a great success with more than 100+ people attending, including Enfield’s mayor, Councillor Muhammad Islam. The evening was overflowing with poetry, spoken word performances, African drumming and a wonderful rendition of Sam Cooke’s song – ‘A Change is Gonna Come.
The audience enjoyed the quiz about African-Caribbean general knowledge which generated so much noise and excitement as teams vied against each other. The winning team scored 18 out of 20!
ECA patron, Professor Patrick Vernon OBE made the keynote address discussing the current status regarding the Windrush scandal and compensation to those affected.
ECA Chair, Oveta McInnis said. “Celebrating our Windrush pioneers is an important moment in the UK’s post war history and our annual calendar. This was a superb evening. The acts were outstanding. Each of the performers gave so much of themselves, each so unique. Patrick Vernon’s tributes to individual Windrush pioneers was very moving.
“The event was enjoyed by a full house. We are thankful to the community who continue to support our events,” Oveta added.
Dionne John Associate Trustee at ECA and Chair at BHH said “The synergy of working alongside ECA went extremely well. The atmosphere in the venue was so warm and positive. There was such a strong sense of unity, community and love.”
ECA and BHH would like to thank the following for their donations to the raffle prize:
