There was plenty of laughter and smiles during the Black Film Club’s latest children screening of Wicked last Saturday, 21 February.
This Academy Award winning film Wicked reimagines Oz through the electrifying friendship between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a brilliant, misunderstood outsider, and Glinda (Ariana Grande), the kingdom’s golden girl. As they navigate power, politics and prejudice, their choices rewrite the story behind the myths we thought we knew.
Following the screening, numerous children were inspired by the film and participated in a variety of themed family activities, such as face painting and art activities. Please refer to the images below for examples of the children’s engagement in these activities.
Claudette Ebanks, a trustee at ECA said, “The film was excellent and the children totally enjoyed it. They expressed themselves through Wicked-themed artwork with colour pencil and stencil, producing some impressive designs. They also chose striking split-face designs – one side painted emerald green with black hat and the other side shimmering pink with flowers – representing Elphaba and Glinda wonderfully.”
The next film in BFC’s season is Stolen Dreams: Redemption on Friday 27 March at 7pm at Dugdale Art Centre,
This is a new film from British filmmaker Emeka Egbuonu, Stolen Dreams Redemption is a gripping and emotionally charged film exploring youth violence, consequences, and redemption.
Meet Trey, a young man in prison forced to confront the choices that shattered lives, including his own. Through intense therapy sessions with a prison psychologist, buried truths begin to surface. This powerful drama explores guilt, healing, and the hope of redemption.
The screening will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with writer and director Emeka Egbuonu and members of the cast.
