Almost 3000 People Died From Heat Excess This June
According to Friends of the Earth, the most affected by extreme heat are older people (over-75s), young children, and low-income households living in nature-deprived, poorly insulated neighborhoods. People of color and marginalized communities are also disproportionately impacted due to structural inequalities.
Kierra Box currently leads work on Trade and Environmental Regulation at Friends of the Earth. Kierra will discuss with us who are the most affected by heat excess through the work done by Friends of The Earth. FOE research has found that the most vulnerable communities are less responsible than average for causing climate change but will bear the brunt of it.
Dr Mehri Khosravi is a Senior Research Fellow from East London University and a an environmental social scientist. Mehri will discuss with us what we can do locally. Her work focuses on how individuals, communities, and governance systems respond to climate extremes, particularly urban heat and how inclusive risk communication can drive behavioural change and equitable adaptation.
Tony Perkins MP is Chair of the Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee. Their remit is to consider the extent to which the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, and to audit their performance against sustainable development and environmental protection targets.
So join us in this July to discuss the Heat Crisis how serious will it get, who will be affected the most and what we can do to help each other.
