We’re screening Pressure (1976), the first Black British feature-length drama, directed by Horace Ové and co-written with Samuel Selvon. It follows Tony, a second-generation Black British teenager caught between his immigrant parents’ hopes for quiet assimilation and his brother’s Black Power politics, as he comes up against the racism, police harassment and rejection of the society he’d tried to belong to.
Shot with a raw, guerrilla-filmmaking edge and shelved by the BFI for nearly three years over its depiction of police brutality, Pressure has since been named one of the greatest British films ever made and remains just as urgent today. Restored in 4K and re-premiered at the London and New York Film Festivals in 2023.
