Tribute to Herman Ouseley

Herman was a true champion and trailblazer for race equality and justice.

I was fortunate to be an officer at the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) when Herman became its Chair in 1993.

One of Herman’s goals through his tenure was that, “The importance of the CRE’s mission deserved continued public prominence, so that more people can work with the CRE around a common goal and help realise its vision of a just society for all”.

Despite the complexities in the wider race equality environment, he sought to ensure that the CRE was not only fit for purpose but expanded our vision and understanding of what we could achieve.  He also sought to dispel many of the untruths about the Commission’s so -called “political correctness”.

Two of his greatness qualities were his focus and attention to detail.

On a personal level, through various interactions with him, he made me believe that I was capable of achieving far more than I thought I could – for which I am externally grateful.

Rest in peace Herman.
