It is with deep sadness and immense gratitude that we pay tribute to Sir Geoff Palmer KT OBE, a remarkable scientist, trailblazer, and tireless campaigner for justice, who passed away aged 85.
Sir Geoff was not only a world-renowned grain scientist and Scotland’s first Black professor, but also a generous soul who used his platform to uplift and empower communities across the UK — including ours.
The Enfield Caribbean Association was fortunate to have Sir Geoff among our cherished supporters. Our Chair Paul Riddell invited Sir Geoff to speak at a Careers day at Enfield grammar School for Boys. I remember it well – you could hear a pin drop – both the satff and students were totally captured by his talk. He shared his story and offered words of wisdom, resilience, and encouragement to the young people navigating their futures. He never failed to inspire with stories of overcoming adversity — from arriving in the UK as a boy labelled “educationally subnormal” to becoming one of the most distinguished academics of his generation.
Sir Geoff was also a guest speaker at our Windrush Launch and Black History Month events, where he brought history to life with eloquence, warmth, and unwavering truth. His commitment to activism, and deep commitment to uncovering and confronting Britain’s colonial past helped spark important conversations that continue to shape the way we teach, understand, and honour Black British history.
He was a man of integrity, intellect, and compassion , always willing to help community groups such as ours— never seeking fame but always seeking justice.
We honour his legacy as a scientist, an educator, an activist, and above all, a champion of equality and truth. His support of community organisations like ours reflected his belief that lasting change starts locally, with people empowered by knowledge, heritage, and pride.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Margaret, and family. We will continue to honour his memory by investing in our youth and celebrating our heritage, just as Sir Geoff did, fearlessly and with grace.
Rest in Power, Sir Geoff Palmer.
You have left an indelible mark on our hearts, our community, and our history. You will not be forgotten.
